A smartphone is not merely a handheld device but its a contrivance. Each smartphone that we use today is a marvellous piece of engineering and the soul, the operating system that powers them, are not only meant to provide useful and now necessary functionalities but are also crafted to provide an elegant user experience. This not only comprises of delightful design but something beyond that, something which is related to how effortless and pleasing it is to use the device, and that thing makes us obsessed with the device.
Today, mobile devices are powered by so many different operating systems but two buzzwords that always echo in the everyday world are Android and iOS. We are not here to stimulate the intense wrangle between enormous user community of these operating systems about which one is better.
Android phones are pretty great, offering unending customization and many free apps. However, even with all their benefits, many people(especially at the top end) still prefer iPhone over Android smartphone. This is not just because of the set of features it has, or the extravagant price that you pay to buy it, it is the overall user experience about iOS that makes people fall in love with it. With the latest update of Lollipop Android is finally ready to give iOS an intense competition. Android provides computer like functionalities which makes it a tad more complex and less innate to use. User’s perspective and use case differs,on the iOS side people like to have a smartphone which has almost zero learning curve and performs every task at the blink of eye. While, at the Android camp we have those who want an engaging masterpiece which can be customized to suit their perception of ease and beauty.

Android’s idea of a desktop like home screen with shortcuts, multi screen and widget makes it open for customization but, also results in a steep learning curve that is not liked by all user.Look and interface of homescreen can be completely modified with a third party launcher application. Many users love this flexibility about Android, but sometimes such an ability of customization makes interface unnecessarily complex for simple users.iOS approach of allowing users to quickly launch application and a consistent interface for launching Siri search gives easy access to device’s functionalities.
One of the most beautifully designed things by folks at Google is the Android lock screen.Lock Screen in Android has become so much more useful after Lollipop;allowing you to quickly toggle settings like WiFi,switching user;displaying all the notifications which also gives ability to take quick actions and really the best part is the music player controls at lockscreen.Although iOS also provides this but Android’s implementation with all the controls and music art at background makes your phone look like a dedicated music player device.

Smartphone delivers real time updates from applications in the notification bar, at the top portion of screen. In iOS a dedicated section for displaying today’s events in notification bar aids to busy life.Google now in Android does similar work, with lot more information, but interface perplexes user. Lollipop has a much more powerful notification bar, notifications in Android can render extra information when expanded and provide facility to take some quick actions, but the interface is not natural to use.Setting toggles can also be accessed through notification bar in Android which is more powerful in functionality than iOS’s control panel.
Multi tasking is the real weapon of today’s smartphone and Android has taken this to a whole new level with its latest update. It provides well designed menu facilitating speedy switching and multitasking within multitasking.iOS stratergy of horizontally scrollable list doesn’t provide fast switching when a lot of applications are concurrently running.Android should definetly replace less useful google search widget with favourite contacts icon in overview menu, just like iOS.

Google and Apple are bit sidetracking from the fact that a smartphone is a mobile phone,These smartphones still lack an ultimate interface to manage thousand of contacts effectively and unchallengingly. But calling interface provided by Google Android with bold favourite contacts icon,to quickly connect to loved ones, and a well designed all-options at once interface clearly surpasses iOS’s calling interface, which might be a tad more faster in performance but can be improved to be more powerful in functionality and design.Talking about web browsing,it’s a smoother experience in iOS while Android’s chrome still suffers from sporadic fraughts, which needs to be fixed.iOS also has a large quality collection of applications in app store. But Android is now slowly picking up the pace, developers are shifting from iOS first approach to cross platform strategy.
After all this visual comparison camera is one feature of smartphones which cant’t be neglected, and iPhone’s camera, hands down, it is just splendorous. The camera and iOS’s camera application work together to provide a interface which allows you to quickly click pictures (because of fast and meticulous auto focus),customize it and view it, all through a single screen interface.Image produced has accurate color tones, contrast and the high quality photograph speaks of world-class engineering in the camera. In contrast the Android’s camera is not very fast and precise in clicking photographs.
User experience comparison is incomplete without scrutinizing the hardware design, and except few smartphones Android devices are generally not very attractive whereas iPhones are attention grabbers.Consistency in iPhone design has resulted in an impulsive hardware interface while Google’ Android OEM lack design unity.A user’s outlook on each of the device(whether Android or iOS) is very different from other, developers stratagem to assuage user’s need might not be same but Google and Apple have an ultimate goal of making human life a plain sailing. iOS being fast and less fault-prone,is less baffling to non tech savvy users while Android’s flexibility in its user interface, provides so much room for customization, and makes it a powerful operating system. So,the next time when you buy a smartphone do think whether you fancy to experiment with it and make it your own or you need it to use applications and take great pictures through an idiot-proof and fast user interface? The choice is yours...
